STUDYING ABROAD IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE

To help you understand why I wanted to study abroad, I wanted to share an excerpt from my winning Gilman Scholarship essay.

My pursuit of higher education has been a deeply personal and transformative adventure characterized by challenges and triumphs. Acknowledging that adversity is a shared human experience, I am humbled by the resilience and fortitude that have guided me this far. I am thankful for the trials I have endured and their invaluable lessons.

At this moment in my journey, I find myself navigating the continuous complexities of life and forging my path forward. Yet, amidst the uncertainty, I am fully aware of the significance of this moment—the opportunity to pursue the completion of my bachelor's degree. Recognizing the fleeting nature of time and my aspirations for the future, I feel compelled to seize this opportunity with unwavering determination.

For me, this educational pursuit is not merely a personal ambition; it is a foundational step towards building a fulfilling life that encompasses my aspirations and the unknown future. Embracing this endeavor with a sense of purpose, I am committed to charting a course that honors my past experiences and aspirations for the future.

As I plan my academic schedule abroad, I chose two courses. Global fashion marketing will assist in further understanding consumer purchases around the globe through market research, consumer motivation, product strategy, and more. We live in a consumer-centric world, so we must understand the fashion industry is one of the main drivers of consumer purchases worldwide. Magazine journalism practicum ties well with global marketing as the curriculum involves writing and editing social media content in print and online versions. Aiming to foster journalistic skills such as idea development, research, outlining, interviewing, and copy editing. These courses contribute to the completion of my bachelor's degree, as well as to expand my professionalism in the workplace.

The connection between my country of study and my goals is notable. Rome, a vibrant city, is rich in the history of fashion and culture, providing an ideal backdrop for my academic and career pursuits. Italy's renowned designers, such as Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada, Gianni Versace, and Stefano Gabbana, are just some of the many who have left their mark on the global fashion landscape. Furthermore, the proximity to Milan, a mere four-hour train ride away, offers access to one of the world's premier fashion capitals, further enriching my educational experience.

Rome is the Eternal City, not only a political capital and center of religion but a memorial to the creatives and architectural design. I imagine myself sitting on the Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti steps like many artists and travelers before me. I lay my eyes upon the Tirelli atelier, a landmark in costume history. Admiring the architecture of Rome as I stand on Janiculum Hill at dusk, the settling sun bathing the city in a warm glow. From the Colosseum to the Pantheon to the Vatican City, the endless amount of culture, history, and art is truly majestic and has inspired many, and I can only hope to feel the same.

Achieving academic success and immersing myself in the city will require meticulous planning. As a full-time student juggling a full-time job, I am no stranger to a full schedule, bringing me to enroll in the study abroad program summer courses to maintain my two-year plan at a University. In addition to my academic responsibilities, I devote my spare time to nurturing my small fashion brand, vending at local markets, and showcasing at fashion shows. Furthermore, I freelance to supplement my income, ensuring financial stability amidst the rising cost of living. By maintaining a 4.0 GPA while balancing these demands, I aim to surpass my academic standards abroad and unlock new opportunities for growth and advancement.

My professional experiences have equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the challenges of my program. Working for a nonprofit organization has honed my people skills, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and fostering a strong work ethic. As a problem solver and advocate for positive change, I am proficient at engaging in various encounters with people, embodying professionalism in every endeavor. These experiences serve as a foundation upon which I will build my academic success, leveraging my strengths to overcome any obstacles that may arise.

The impact of this abroad experience extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. It represents a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in a cultural melting pot and draw inspiration from every facet of life. In Rome, inspiration for fashion design abounds, whether in the city's magnificent architecture, rich culinary traditions, or the warmth of its people. Art is not confined to galleries but permeates every aspect of daily life, offering a canvas to explore and innovate. By embracing this educational adventure, I am confident that my future will be shaped by newfound perspectives, skills, and insights that will propel me toward success in the dynamic world of fashion.
